Individual therapy – sometimes referred to as “counseling” or “psychotherapy” – is a process during which individuals work one-on-one with a therapist to explore problematic areas in their lives or areas in which change is desired.
Ultimately, people seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Some need assistance in coping with major life challenges, whereas others require help working through bothersome and influential memories of past traumas. Still, other people may need help coping with anxiety, depression, or other mental illness and some others simply desire increased self-awareness, personal growth, and improved self-esteem. Pivotal to successful change is the client-therapist relationship. The therapist works to create a safe, caring, and confidential environment thereby allowing the client to feel confident and comfortable. This therapeutic environment provides individuals with the space needed to explore and challenge existing beliefs, feelings, and behaviors in an effort to promote individual change.
During an initial session, a therapist at Tampa Bay Psychology Associates will collaborate with the client to identify existing areas of concern, understand how these areas became problematic, and create mutual treatment goals. The client and therapist will continue to work together throughout treatment to satisfy and modify goals, as needed. Sometimes, additional treatment referrals sources will be provided based on identified needs. These may include: psychiatric evaluations, psychological testing, family therapy , couples counseling, or inpatient treatment.
